off with his head

Peter Fincham capped an incredible summer for broadcasting by resigning today from the BBC. Seen as one of its brightest stars, his departure underlines how serious the crisis facing our industry is. Collapsing trust in the traditional broadcasters on the one hand, and threats to core television journalism on the other. One of the lessons that must surely be learnt is that quality and standards are crucial ingredients for broadcasters of integrity. A cavalier approach to programme-making can spectacularly rebound. A significant re-balancing needs to take place; getting rid of experienced professionals in favour of exploiting cheaper labour is not the answer. Valuing all your talent and giving them confidence that you know what you are doing might help.
