So Planet Relief is the latest casualty as public infighting continues at the BBC. We have increasingly unseemly positioning by senior BBC figures. Genuine turf war or just the hype associated with the 'silly season'?
Since the licence fee announcement there has been much speculation, but no clear information, as to the future direction of the BBC and nothing about plans for staffing.
For a creative organisation this kind of uncertainty is damaging; Everyone is told that there is a storm on the way yet no-one is told where it will hit and where shelter can be found.
If those briefing the media are even only half informed, the BBC is set for another period of self-harm.
Staff meanwhile, whose views have not been canvassed at any point, will be expected to bear the brunt of any changes. It is clear that the new governance structure is causing problems. In the old days, the BBC was at least in control of its own destiny. Plans would no doubt have been flawed but at least you knew what they were, and the Board of Governors were an after-thought.
In today's BBC, everyone is second guessing, not just what the executive think, but also how the Trust will react. The end result stalemate and idle gossip.
It may have been set up with good intentions, however the new BBC Trust has yet to establish that it will work in the interests of the public who pay the licence fee. If they approve drastic cuts this Autumn they can be sure of a bumpy ride.
