Surreal BBC

I spent some time at the BBC media centre in White city today, discussing the current problems the organisation faces. The place houses the corporate functions of the BBC and is truly bizarre.

Commissioned at a time when private finance was seen as the answer to the corporations strict borrowing limit. Big capital programmes brought in money up front with a heavy long term price to pay. Since it was opened, it has remained only partially full. At one point the ground floor held communal space for people to work.

Now it contains a variety of expensive looking exhibitions. Strangely, none of which can be seen by the public. The ground floor also houses the Children in Need department with a huge banner congratulating the team on their efforts.

Meanwhile, a parade of ex Director Generals look down from the walls. Portaits showing us that nothing is permanent..
